What is a Level 1 or L1 charger and how does it work?
A Level 1 (L1) charger is the “trickle charger” or emergency cable that should come with your EV. This is the slowest charger that exists and should be used in a backup situation. You can slow charge your vehicle by plugging it into most power outlets.
The L1 charger uses a standard 20-volt (V) AC outlet supplying an average output of 1.3 kW to 2.4 kW. In other words, you can plug your L1 charger into a standard power outlet in or outside of your garage, if one already exists.
How fast is a Level 1 or L1 charger?
A Level 1 charger is not fast at all, taking up to 24 hours to recharge your EV. This charger can be used if you are not in a hurry to power up your EV, or in a backup situation.
What is a Level 2 or L2 charger and how does it work?
The Level 2 (L2) EV charger is commonly used in households and is much faster than the L1. You need to have the L2 charger specially installed by an electrician in order to use it.
The L2 charger operates at 208 -240 volts (V) and has an average output of 3 kW to 19 kW of AC power. You could say that the L2 is the residential standard of EV charging.
How fast is a Level 2 or L2 charger?
A Level 2 charger is much faster than the Level 1 charger, taking 8 hours to fully recharge most EVs. This charger typically should be set to charge overnight, so that the vehicle will be fully powered up by the next morning.
