Regular furnace maintenance is the best way to prevent large, costly repairs and furnace breakdowns. We recommend scheduling furnace maintenance at least once per year. The best way to prevent furnace repairs? Replace your filter every 3 months and schedule a maintenance appointment at least once a year. However, some furnace repairs are bound to happen over the life of your furnace. Here are some of the most common furnace issues we see.

Broken Blower Motor

If you notice you’re not getting adequate heat from your furnace system, a broken blower motor could be the problem. A broken blower can be caused by a variety of things, including dust buildup, belt issues, and general wear and tear. The blower motor is responsible for distributing heat throughout your ducts and home, so when it’s broken, the heat won’t make it past your furnace.

Pilot Light Gone Out

Your furnace relies on a small blue flame called a pilot light to ignite the burners. A number of issues could cause problems with your pilot light, including a loose or faulty thermocouple, a damaged flue, or leaky ducts. If the pilot light is still on but is glowing red or yellow (instead of blue like it should be), then your problem could be a dirty furnace or a fuel supply issue.

Leaking Furnace

Furnaces can leak a variety of fluids for many reasons. Most often a furnace will leak water, usually because of a condensation problem, air conditioner drain issue, or a humidifier clog. While water might seem less serious than a furnace leaking oil or gas, it still needs to be dealt with right away to prevent further damage.

Broken Thermostat

Your thermostat plays a critical role when it comes to ensuring your furnace is functioning correctly and efficiently. If you adjust your thermostat and there’s no change in temperature, you could have a thermostat problem. You might just need to replace the batteries. If fresh batteries don’t fix the problem, it could be time for a new thermostat, or there could be a more complicated issue with the wiring.

Dirty or Clogged Filters

While it’s not technically a furnace repair, one of the most common sources of furnace problems come from dirty furnace filters. You should be replacing your furnace filter every 3 months. If not, your filter will collect more and more dust, debris, and other particles, interfering with airflow. This causes your furnace to work harder, leading to more wear and tear and, ultimately, more frequent furnace repairs.
